Regatta Day
Circa 1989
At Bedford, in the month of June,
For summer never comes too soon,
The river Ouse is alive with crafts,
there's fours and eights, and some in rafts,
And crews from schools, and many a town,
All paddling up, but rowing down,
Through the town bridge, past Duckmill Green,
A flotilla of boats, good to be seen.

From far and near the spectators come,
There's wise old granddad, and smiling mum,
And friend meets friend, whilst on the Ouse
There's plenty of eights from which to choose
The likely winner of the senior prize,
We leave that to experts who specialise.
And the Embankments floral display,
Helps to make this a memorable day.

In the Mayor's enclosure, with badges crested,
Are the 'Old Boys' some pigeon chested,
Gazing around for a friendly face,
With hardly a glance at the college race,
And in the enclosure's main marquee
Guests all queue for strawberry cream tea,
And many exciting tales are told,
As the cream disappears, and the tea goes cold.

By seven the tankards are all given out,
With many a call, and many a shout,
And proud Bedfordians raise a cheer,
Hoping there'll all come back next year.
The Stewards with bold finesse,
To make this day such a huge success,
That departing crews look back and say,
We're glad we came to Bedford - on Regatta Day.
