| The Walls Came Down in '89 |
| Circa 1990 |
It’s four in the morning, the party is done, Friends sharing memories, closeness and fun. It’s so quiet as I clear the debris away Like the new world we live in on this New Year’s day. Yes, a time to reflect on the year just gone by, A year like no other, it’s special, and why ?
Because the wall came down in ’89
A year of anguish for people that cried And, as is our way, far too many died But far fewer than one might have guessed As the nuclear cataclysm we feared regressed. We the people have spoken, and what a release We earned a new chance to move forward in peace.
When the wall came down in ’89
Walls can be barriers, like that one in Berlin, Keeping out freedom while keeping people in, But walls can also exist in the mind Walls that use thoughts, not mortar, to bind People, not bricks, into some common goal One with a purpose but without a soul
Those walls came down in ’89
An old decade is closing and we all start anew In a world with so, so much to do New friends and old enemies now seem as one, A cold war has gone, a new process begun One we can’t yet foresee, we don’t know the solution. We the people say make Peace our New Year’s resolution
Because the wall came down in ‘89
